Waldfriedhof, SH

On today's fine public holiday I took my new square watercolor block, sat by the City Nursery facing the entrance to the Forest Cemetery and splashed my watercolors happily all over the page. A few people walked by, enjoying the multitude of colorful flowers after visiting their late relatives or friends. I had hoped for sunshine but the sky was overcast, leaving me with hardly any directional shadows.
I had "Die Drei Fragezeichen" for company :-)

Tree tales

Kristen of www.sleeplessbeekeeper.com was so kind to allow me to use her daughter's photo as a reference.

Meet the tree fairy, who listens to the woes and tales of one of the Old Ones.

It's actually a more elaborate sketch in my sketchbook, 9.5 x 12 cm /3.7 x 4.7 inches
I tweaked the colors just a bit because they were a bit too much on the green side.

I used two brushes, a Pentel water brush and some old round brush that I never use because it does not have a point and loses hair all the time. Surprisingly though, it is able to hold a lot of pigment and water.

Oatmeal breakfast

I am on holiday!

That means I've got a looot of time in the morning to sketch my breakfast while waiting for it to cool down 😋 Oh I am enjoying this so much!!!

...and I was sketching in my triad sketchbook, too, with just three colors:
French Ultramarine, Alizarin Crimson, Aureolin Yellow.

C'an Picafort

Just back from holidays.
Mallorca is warm, sunny and the beach in the north I was at was rather huge, considering the other beaches of the island.
However, for various reasons, Mallorca is best enjoyed for one week - no longer.

Before I left, I bought a brand spanking new palette of Winsor and Newton Artist's Water Colour half pans and a size 10 daVinci travel brush. It was quite expensive, all in all, but the difference in quality is so obvious when painting, it was worth it.
I think if you buy something expensive but then make very good use of it, it is money well invested.

I am still fiddling around with finding the right sketchbook size for on location watercolor sketching, but for now the Moleskine Large Watercolor (A5) sketchbook best fits my needs.
How do I know? I ran out of pages.
Next time I should just pack an single empty A5 sketchbook instead of the A4, A5 and A6.

First tryout of my new palette at the beach.
Girls playing cards at the bar tables
This woman spent forever to find out which position is best for reading a thick paperback.
I don't think she found out, but she made for a very life-drawing-class-like subject,
moving every 5 minutes, if not more often.

People at the pool
Holiday time is reading time! I love my Kindle 3G Keyboard.
Beach of C'an Picafort. On some days, the sea is so still, you can walk through the water and see everything.
On this day, the sea was a mix of water and sand.
Beach of C'an Picafort again. Squeezing out the last lines of my edding 1800 profipen 0.1.
I have ordered Pigma Microns now to try out. They are hard to come by in my part of the world.
Hotel room.
View down from the balcony.
Trying to pass time while it was raining outside.
The pool palm tree.
Ze Germans at the beach.
Watching the Reading vs Tottenham Hotspur match at a British bar.
People at the travel agent's and the hotel lobby. Very shiny floor tiles.
Obligatory in-flight sketch with a Rotring Tikky Graphic 0.3. I prefer 0.1 for A5 formats.

Just a wee thank you

Just a wee thank you to all that visited my blog last month. I have, since June 2009, never hit the 1000-views mark, but in March 2012 it went just above 1660 views for some reason .

WIP: Christmas card 2011

Work in Progress: Christmas card
In Arbeit: Weihnachtskarte

This time the format is a little bigger compared to my most recent paintings, and I am using Ecolines (liquid watercolor) instead of watercolor pans. I was not sure if this painting was going to get anywhere when I started it but now it does not look so bad. I just need to figure out how I'll do the kids' clothes, the floor, and the carpet.

Pilze

I really don't like painting leaves.
Ich mag es wirklich nicht, Blätter zu malen.

Bergkirche

I know a handful of couples who got married at that church.
It's my first time doing the whole plein air thing with my A4 watercolor sketchbook. Using a whole page spread though takes too much time, especially if your are sitting in direct sunlight. By the time you are done, you are sweating and dehydrated.

This is not an EDM drawing challenge to be exact but it fits this theme: #77 - Draw something cold or cool.
Es ist nicht wirklich eine EDM Challenge um genau zu sein aber es passt zu diesem Thema: #77 - Zeichne etwas Kaltes oder Kühles.
